You will lead the Environmental Chemical Analysis Facility (ECAF) at ETH Zurich and ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of its instruments and user facilities. Your role combines running a modern analytical facility with supporting a diverse research and teaching community.

Deine Aufgaben

  • Shape and launch ECAF as a modern, user-focused chemical analysis facility by developing policies, procedures, user culture, and strategy.
  • Oversee daily operations, making sure all instruments and user spaces are available and running smoothly.
  • Support users in developing and optimizing analytical protocols, including sample preparation workflows and quality assurance concepts.
  • Provide advice during experimental design and help translate research needs into analytical workflows.
  • Contribute as a scientific and technical partner to research projects using ECAF infrastructure.
  • Share supervision of technical staff and student assistants with the ECAF faculty Director.
  • Plan and coordinate preventive maintenance, repairs, vendor support, and service contracts for all facility equipment.
  • Develop and maintain user registration, onboarding, training, and operational oversight workflows.
  • Manage inventory, operational documentation, internal billing, and provide input for annual fee setting and budget planning.
  • Serve as a member of the ECAF Directorate, contributing to operational planning, policy implementation, and continuous improvement.

Was du mitbringst

  • Advanced degree (PhD) in analytical chemistry, environmental sciences, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience with modern analytical instrumentation and laboratory workflows (such as LC-MS, GC, ICP, IC, elemental analysis, or optical spectroscopy).
  • Ability to manage complex laboratory infrastructure, coordinate with vendors and service providers, and maintain strong documentation systems.
  • Strong service orientation and communication skills, with the ability to work with diverse user groups and handle competing priorities.
  • Excellent English skills; German is an advantage.
