Join a world-leading research environment to help develop a new reference design for extreme-precision radial velocity (EPRV) spectrographs as part of the HARVY project at ETH Zurich. You will contribute to building advanced instruments that enable the discovery of Earth-like exoplanets around nearby stars, working at the intersection of astrophysics, optical design, and astronomical instrumentation.

Deine Aufgaben

  • Advance the optical design of the HARVY spectrograph, building on an existing concept study
  • Evaluate, characterise, and optimise key novel optical components
  • Lead the design and manufacturing of instrument subsystems
  • Participate in the instrument construction phase
  • Contribute to the preparation and execution of the on-sky test campaign planned for 2028
  • Work at the interface of astrophysics, optical design, and instrumentation
  • Support the long-term goal of detecting Earth analogues and establishing target lists for future exoplanet missions

Was du mitbringst

  • Master's degree in physics, astrophysics, optics, or a closely related field
  • Strong interest in astronomical instrumentation and exoplanet science
  • Experience or interest in optical design, spectroscopy, or precision measurements
  • Programming and data analysis skills (e.g. Python, MATLAB, Zemax, or similar tools)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an international research team
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written)

Was wir dir bieten

  • Fully funded PhD position with competitive salary according to ETH standards
  • Interdisciplinary and international research environment
